Oh I do like to be beside the seaside
The paediatric team at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital offers excellent care for all children and young people across East Devon from 0-18 years of age.
Working alongside interior designer Kay Hanson of Studio Hanson, our brief was to enhance the hospital ward and the healthcare environment to improve the patient and visitor journey.
Our solution
We were keen to enhance the sense of well-being and fun for patients and families using the communal areas. Whilst achieving this, we also needed to ensure that the ethos of a professional, calm and nurturing environment remained.
Our theme for this ward was ‘The Seaside’. We developed bespoke floor to ceiling illustrations to align with the interior design elements such as play beach huts with children’s interactives, feature sky lighting, decorative palm trees, and parasols.
It was important to improve the environment for the children. However, in a paediatric health care setting, parents can suffer equally from anxiety which may be transferred to their child. ‘Calm parents equal calm children’. Therefore our additional aim was to calm the spaces by de-cluttering the walls and providing engaging, distraction-based images, encouraging children and their guardians to take their mind away from the reasons for their hospital visit. We believe that good hospital interior design plays an essential role in the delivery of optimal healthcare.
